50th Anniversary of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom
Fifty years ago, on 19 May 1958, at Villa Hammerschmidt in Bonn, a group of committed Liberals met with the then Federal President, Theodor Heuss, to establish the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. In so doing they acted with precisely the sort of civic involvement that a vibrant democracy requires. If those founders were still with us today, they would be proud of what they started.

The forthcoming European-African Summit in Lisbon December 8-9th 2007 - the first one since the Cairo Summit in 2000 – is proof that Africa is not excluded from the rest of the world. In fact, Africa is part and parcel of international politics and the world economy. Against this background this international conference “From Object to Subject. Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe’s External Relations” took place at an appropriate time and offered a unique opportunity for Africans, Europeans and Americans to critically discuss and review the difficult and sometimes delicate relationship between the European Union (EU), African Union (AU) and its Sub-Saharan member states.

“National champions” - a waste of taxpayers’ money
Large multinational corporations have financial capacities that exceed the gross domestic product of entire countries. Their enormous contribution to employment, growth and fiscal revenues makes it understandable that governments are tempted to nurture local companies to turn them into “national champions”. However, experts attending the recent International Conference on Competition by the Federal Cartel Office agreed that nurturing these national giants makes them dependent on government support rather than allow them to be competitive in international markets.

However, in the era of “Glocalization” (meaning the impact of globalisation on local politics and economy) one also needs to evaluate local autonomy from the economic perspective, in particular, the opportunities and challenges of local governments.
