Conference: New Approaches to Conflict-Management in the Middle East under Scrutiny
The Middle Eastern Region has a large number of long-standing conflicts, of which the most relevant are the Israeli-Arab conflict and the conflict over hegemony in the Gulf since the collapse of state structures in Iraq. There is a controversy in the international political debate over the correct approach that promises more success in resolving these conflicts: the sub-regional or the multilateral.

New Approaches to Conflict-Management in the Middle East under Scrutiny
The Middle Eastern Region has a large number of long-standing conflicts, of which the most relevant are the Israeli-Arab conflict and the conflict over hegemony in the Gulf since the collapse of state structures in Iraq. There is a controversy in the international political debate over the correct approach that promises more success in resolving these conflicts: the sub-regional or the multilateral. The conference will analyse both.

The most important sub-regional approaches, the so-called Goal-Map (an enlarged Road-Map) and the Arab peace initiative will both be put up for discussion. For the first time scenarios of a multilateral approach, a ‘Conference for Security and Cooperation in the Middle Eastern Region’ (CSCME) modelled on the successful CSCE process in Europe, will be presented. Of central importance will be the question which structural and procedural aspects contributed to the success of the CSCE and can be transferred to the Middle Eastern Region or what consequences are to be learnt from the difference between either region.
